Awakening of the great saint - 'Baba Farid ji'
Hazrat Khwaja Fariduddin Masud Ganjshakar (1173 - 1266)
One night Baba Farid ji dreamt that by the grace of God, he has reached paradise. The whole of Paradise was beautifully decorated, millions of lights and flowers everywhere.
Obviously, a great celebration was going on, and beautiful music filled the air.
He inquired of a passerby "What is going on?"
The stranger said, "It is God's birthday, we are celebrating it. You are blessed for you have come at the right time."
So Farid ji stood beneath a tree to see what was happening.
Soon a great procession starts moving on the road. A man is sitting on a horse; Farid ji enquired, "Who is this man?" and they say, "Don't you know him? He is Hazrat Mohammed"
Millions upon millions of people walked behind the Prophet. Farid ji asked, "Who are these people?" and he is replied, "They are Mohammedans, followers of Mohammed."
Then came Jesus, and millions were following him.
Soon Lord Krishna appeared in a splendid golden chariot, and millions were following him.
Then there was Gautam Buddha and countless people followed him too.
On and on went the procession and baba Farid ji grew weary of the magnitude of the procession and the followers.
Finally, in the end, Baba ji noticed an old man riding a donkey and he is all by himself and no one walks behind him.
Farid ji began to laugh looking at this man. It was a ridiculous sight compared to the magnificent processions that preceded the old man and nobody followed him. And why he should be going on his donkey?
Baba ji could not contain himself and he asked the old man "Who are you, sir? I have seen Mohammad, Christ, Krishna, Mahavira, Buddha -- who are you? Is this some sort of joke, for nobody follows you!"
The old man with sadness in his eyes says, " I am God and it is my birthday. People have become Mohammedans, some Christians, others Jews, many have become Hindus or Buddhists, unfortunately no one is left to follow me me so I walk alone
Farid ji woke up with a shock.
He told his disciples the next day, "I had a revelation and I met God. From now on I am no more a Mohammedan nor do I belong to any other organised religion. I will follow the One and only true Master and Creator of the universe. I shall simply be me, myself. I would like to be with God, at least one person following him."
This awakening transformed Baba Farid ji and he was able to enlighten the world with his message of love and universal brotherhood.
My thanks to Jagpreet Ghai who was kind enough to share this piece of spiritual wisdom with us.

Men of God belong to no one religion, yet the universe belongs to them.

ReplyDeleteReligion is a tool devised by man to put fear of God, to keep the followers in toe. As time passed each religion got sub-divided by the influential people or groups to suit their convenience. Christianity has more than 300 denominations, Islam has about 72, Sikhism which is supposedly the youngest religion, also has about 4 different faiths. Religion has been used to create fictive kinship to keep their flock together, to be used against the other. There have been 809 million killings in the world so far, due to religious wars. Religion plays on the 'primal self' to commit the most heinous crimes in the name of God, to justify our misdeeds under the garb of religion. The crusades are one such example amongst the thousands of wars of faith.
There is nothing known as religion in the spiritual world. There is only one language i.e., the language of LOVE. Where there is love, there is no place for hatred, and where there is love, there is no place for fear. Love flows out of selfless service, service flows out of faith and faith flows out of the grace of God. Mercifully, God does not belong to any religion, because God is not man-made.
So religion and God are not two sides of the same coin.
Cheers

ReplyDeleteGurvinder,
This was a departure from your regular discussions.
"One night Baba Farid ji dreamt that by the grace of Allah, he has reached Paradise".
A man had a dream and you expect the readera of your blog to believe anything that follows.
Why do Indian people continue to perpetuate the caste system, we believe bogus thoughts that are passed on to suppress others. You should validate dreams and beliefs before offering them up in your thoughts.
My dear departed friend Sukhinder Singh and I had many discussion on paranomal (bhoot) activities, and being a proud Sikh he was always to provide me with a clear explanation on these type of events. No dream, just clear thoughts.
This piece was weak......
Seasons Greetings,
Sudhir
Dear Sudhir,
ReplyDeleteI always look forward to your responses. They are always encouraging and motivating.
Baba Farid was a muslim and a saint. One of the defining features of a SAdhu, Saint or any true man of God is that they do not belong to a religion, for when there is spirituality there is no place for religion.
I was trying to illuminate that how a revelation to Baba ji in his dreams transformed him and the power of his convictions to announce that he was no more a man of religion but rising among that to become a man of God.
Baba Farid ji is revered by Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs alike particularly in the northern states and his teachings are enshrined in our Guru Granth Sahib.
In fact there is not an iota of caste in his teachings or thoughts.
As you say but I am curious to know, how does one validate dreams and beliefs of someone else particularly of a Saint?
Unlike scientific approach, a belief system or a philosophy has to be formulated before they can be validated.
What do you think?

ReplyDeleteDear Sir,
Wish this mail, awakens some if not all. How true is it that we have forgotten ourselves as human beings and squabble over religion. All the clergies talk about God being the Supreme One but quickly revert to what Hindus, Muslims, Zorastrians etc. Should be doing to fulfill their religious obligations.
My personal thanks for this mail
